Sometimes balance doesn't exist

On why balance isn't about finding the middle

Mar 20, 2025

Sometimes, when we talk about balancing X and Y, we really mean X is valuable in certain situations and Y in others. These situations often overlap enough to form a broader category, yet distinguishing precisely when to apply X or Y demands subtlety. People ask "How do I balance X and Y?" but there's rarely a simple answer: it's tacit knowledge, developed through experience, making the boundary difficult to articulate clearly.

For example:

  • Planning vs. executing.
  • Spontaneity vs. planning.
  • Playfulness vs. seriousness.

Improving balance means honing our skill at 1) recognizing what situations require, and 2) adapting ourselves accordingly.
